Our Social Space

  The Juke Yard

Urban Biodiversity & Community Placemaking

The Juke Yard is our volunteer-led urban biodiversity and placemaking initiative, transforming previously underused outdoor space into a welcoming, accessible green environment for community use.

Supported by partners including Phoenix Energy and delivered in collaboration with The Conservation Volunteers, the project combines environmental stewardship with social connection.

Delivery Model

  • Volunteer-led clean-up and build days
  • Installation of planters, seating and accessible features
  • Biodiversity-focused planting and sustainable design
  • Integration with our wider programme of cultural and social activity

The Juke Yard extends our venue beyond its walls — creating an outdoor space for gathering, informal conversation, creative programming and environmental engagement.

Outcomes

The project contributes to:

  • Increased volunteer participation and community ownership
  • Improved environmental awareness and biodiversity
  • Expanded capacity of our venue as a shared civic space
  • Enhanced wellbeing through outdoor connection and creative placemaking

By activating both indoor and outdoor space, The Juke Yard strengthens Our Social Space as a community cultural hub — investing in infrastructure that supports long-term social health.
